How To - Set Your Account Privacy

First you need to be logged in with your Username and Password. Your default page should be your Account Dashboard (3) (See Account Toolbar image below).

First select your Account Profile (2)
Then select Edit Profile (10)

On the next page, you will be presented with various profile settings such as:

  • About me (Here you can 'write a book' about yourself)
  • Brief description (One or two short sentences if you really 'wrote a book')
  • Location (Country, Region, City, etc. separated by commas - To be hyperlinked to related accounts)
  • Interests (School, University, Hobby, etc. separated by commas - To be hyperlinked to related accounts)
  • Skills (Study direction, Qualifications, etc. separated by commas - To be hyperlinked to related accounts)
  • Contact email (This can be different from your account email)
  • Telephone (International format recommended - Can be used by Skype and dialled with browser integration activated for computer to computer conversations. Skype name and other chat names can also be specified)
  • Mobile phone (See Telephone)
  • Website (This can be any website or your personal Blog at another domain - Provide nice backlink to your website for Search engines and can increase your page rank if privacy set to public)

Some of these data fields may be hyperlinked to enable you to connect to other site members who share the same ‘Interest’, ‘location’, etc. Telephone numbers can even be dialled via your web browser if you have the appropriate software and equipment installed (Such as Skype, which allow people to talk for free from computer to computer via the Internet). You can specify your school, college or university name as an area of ‘Interest’ to find your lost friends, or in the ‘Location’ field you can specify your country, region, city, suburb, and even your street name to find other local people. Data must be separated by commas to create appropriate hyperlinks.

The privacy of each of these fields can be set individually to one of the following:

Private: Only you will see that data on your profile
Friends: Only you and your friends will see that data on your profile
Logged in users: Only you, your friends and logged in site users will see that data on your profile
Public: Everybody on the Internet who visit your profile, will see that data.

PRACTICAL USES

Example 1 - All fields set to Friends: All your contact details will therefore be relative ‘private’ until you accept someone as a friend. It will however be difficult to find friends unless you personally invite them to join you at this facility, or else you should share at least some non-personal data like ‘interests’ in the public domain and specify your school name as an interest.

Example 2 – All fields set to Public: This would typically be the preferred settings for schools, colleges, universities or businesses who want to be found. By specifying a website publically, it creates a backlink to your official website around search terms as specified in other public fields. It can increase your website’s ranking in the search engines. You may however want to consider keeping your email for friends only (students, parents, etc) to avoid spam, or else you can consider using temporary ‘throw-away’ free email addresses like Gmail (Google Mail), Ymail (Yahoo Mail), etc.

Spam Note: It is utterly stupid to spam anybody as it only upsets people; and it can land you, your ISP, your webhost and/or the website you are promoting in trouble. Not even a ‘throw-away’ email address will save your butt. We have a zero tolerance for any spammers and will not hesitate to blacklist and/or ban spammers permanently, not only at this site, but many other networked websites and also via Spamhouse and other DNSbl providers.
